Homemade French Onion Dip

Total time: 1 hour 5 minutesPrep: 10 minutesCook: 55 minutesServes: 3-4

Ingredients

  • 2large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbspbutter
  • 1 tbspneutral oil
  • 1 ½ cupssour cream
  • ¼ cupmayonnaise
  • 1 tspsalt
  • ½ tspblack pepper
  • ¼ tspgarlic powder
  • ¼ tsponion powder
  • ½ tspWorcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 2-3 tbspfresh chives, finely chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a wide, heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt the butter with the oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, translucent, and limp, about 10 minutes.

  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue cooking, stirring every few minutes, until the onions are deeply caramelized, evenly golden-brown, and jammy, 30–45 minutes depending on pan width. If fond builds up or the onions begin to stick, deglaze with a small splash of water and scrape clean. Transfer onions to a plate and cool completely.

  3. In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire (if using) until smooth.

  4. Fold in the cooled onions (and chives, if using). Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Note: Chilling allows the dried aromatics to hydrate, the onions to mellow, and the dairy fats to firm up, giving the dip proper body and flavor.
